Have you ever asked yourself what "spirito di punto" actually means? Not its literal meaning, of course, which is obvious to even the most English of linguists, but its "brand" meaning, if you like. The Fiat Punto ads that first featured the phrase toyed with preconceptions about the different driving habits and interests of males and females, but surely no one outside a media studies course would argue that the marketing line was intended as a postmodern critique of consumer sexism.

It might be said that the words evoke a sense of liberation, but then it's hard to think of a more constricting idea than the "spirit of point". The point is it's pointless, although very effectively pointless. They sound good, the words, yet they are best left unexamined.

We never really considered ourselves the Fiat Punto kind, but the 2010 Evo variant strikes a chord, and for a little guy it comes with a lot of kit. The Blue&Me interface will be available on all trim levels, providing control of all the car's major functions, along with a mobile phone, MP3 player and touch-screen navigation. On top of that will be rain sensors, ESP with Hill Holder, engine start-stop and adaptive cornering fog lights.

There's a new look, commitment and enthusiasm at a refurbished Jeep plant in Detroit and it is a model being replicated across Chrysler Group LLC's 28 North American plants.

Chrysler has spent $700 million on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Jefferson North assembly plant where it is being built. But the investment represents more than the traditional tooling and promises that accompany the launch of a next-generation vehicle.

Cars are now being built the Fiat SpA way. After Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy June 10 and formed a partnership with Fiat, CEO Sergio Marchionne ordered all Chrysler plants to adopt Fiat's World Class Manufacturing system, designed to improve quality and productivity by eliminating waste and bottlenecks.

Fiat’s Compact architecture to underpin 700,000 Chrysler vehicles in the U.S.

Fiat SpA’s new Compact vehicle architecture, which will debut on the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta hatchback, is scheduled to underpin 700,000 Chrysler group vehicles a year in the United States and 300,000 in Europe by 2014. Fiat and Chrysler are currently working on a widened version of the architecture, known as Compact Wide, which will underpin at least seven new models for the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands.

According to Automotive News, the first Chrysler Group vehicles to get the Compact Wide architecture will replace the PT Cruiser and the Dodge Caliber in 2012.

DRIVING around in something that looks like Postman Pat's van might not be everyone's idea of fun.

When its colour is a luminescent metallic green rather than the anticipated Royal Mail red, then one might rightly imagine it would be even less appealing!

Despite my initial prejudices, I have to confess that I actually enjoyed my time at the wheel of the Fiat Qubo.

Yes, it might look rather odd, but it has just the right combination of practicality, and 'quirky' appeal to ensure it's a winner.

The first thing that impressed me was the magnificent visibility offered from the driver's seat, to the point where I felt a little like a coach driver with nothing but glass in front of, and around, me.

Vehicle cabins frequently get described as 'open and airy,' and the Qubo takes this to extremes with a feeling that is positively bus-like.

In essence it is one of the latest crop of budget MPVs that are more van-like than car-like - though it is based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform. Cheap and cheerful, they are designed to appeal to families who might love to have a big swanky SUV, but simply don't have the budget. Either that, or it serves as a second car that is functional first and foremost.

Pricing for the forthcoming Fiat Punto Evo has just been announced by Fiat Group Automobiles UK.

With a starting price of £10,995 OTR the new car, which goes on sale in the UK in January, represents outstanding value for money. At the top end of the Punto Evo range, the highly specified Sporting 1.4 MultiAir version costs £15,295 – an OTR price that includes sports seats, cruise control, side skirts, air conditioning, sports suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Available with a choice of five low emissions, Euro 5 engines, all fitted with Start&Stop as standard, the new Punto Evo comes in five different trim levels – Active, Dynamic, GP, Eleganza and Sporting.

Italian carmaker Fiat SpA (F.MI) Friday said it is sticking to plans to convert a plant in Sicily, despite protests from workers.

Union workers at the Termini Imerese plant have been protesting all week, demanding that Fiat provide more certainty on the future of the plant, which the firm has said is the most costly to operate of all of its plants.

After the workers occupied the town hall, politicians vowed to raise their concerns with Fiat in the coming weeks.

But Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said Fiat is sticking to plans to convert the plant by 2012.

"Keeping all of the plants open and doing all these necessary things are... demands that are no longer feasible in a world that has drastically changed," he told reporters at an event at Fiat's research centre in this town near Turin in the country's northwest. "We can't turn back to a reality that no longer exists."

Marchionne said a single Fiat plant in Brazil made more cars than its six plants in Italy combined over the year. He has yet to say what he wants Termini Imerese to do if not cars.

He and other Fiat officials are to hold meetings with union and government officials in the coming weeks to discuss their plans for Fiat in Italy. Their plans are a likely extension of the one presented in Detroit Nov. 4 to revive Chrysler Group LLC, its U.S. partner.

Marchionne is also expected to discuss the possible extension of Italy's car scrappage scheme when he meets with the government next month.

With several of these schemes expiring across Europe, analysts fear that demand will fall once more, making 2010 a difficult year for carmakers already struggling to survive the industry's worst crisis in decades.

In an interview with Reuters, Montezemolo dismissed a suggestion by analysts with asset management fund Sanford Bernstein that Volkswagen AG could be the right buyer for the money-losing brand. He also said Fiat doesn't need an Asian partnership to match recent tie-ups by European competitors with Japanese automakers.

"We will present the new Alfa that substitutes the 147, and we think there are also very important opportunities for Alfa Romeo in the United States," Montezemolo said.

Alfa's aging 147 hatchback will be replaced early next year by the Giulietta, a car that may be Alfa's last new model. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has ordered a strategic review of the brand to consider whether to freeze substantial investments after the introduction of the Giulietta or to refresh Alfa's lineup using Chrysler Group platforms. Those platforms could be used to replace the aging Alfa 159 sedan and wagon and the discontinued 166 flagship sedan.

Alfa's new-car sales have declined steeply in the past decade as its range became older and new products were delayed.

Last year, Alfa sold 103,000 new cars, down from 203,000 in 2000. The brand has lost between 200 million and 400 million euros a year in the past 10 years, according to industry sources. Fiat does not release separate financial results for any of its brands.

NEVER let it be said that little cars are born to be boring.

Fiat has proved without doubt that small is very definitely beautiful with its iconic 500 that hit the streets in 2008 exactly 500 hours after the start of the New Year.

The 500 is a nostalgic take of Dante Giacosa's iconic Fiat 500 of July 1957 and it was a very feeling strange getting behind the wheel of the new car because I can compare it to the original which I drove in the mid-1960s.

It is certainly not easy mixing the old with the new, but there are rules for success. Firstly any such interpretation must have modern handling, technology, safety, performance and ease of ownership.

It must also reflect the character of the original and just make you smile.

And that has been achieved without doubt with the 500. As soon as you see it you know that it is special.

Open the door and take in the 1950s styling cues and you know that you have a car that you will never treat as plain ordinary. This model, a basic 1.2 Pop featured a white steering wheel and trim with a painted red body colour dash. It really felt the part.

But where it does not feel like the original is in the technical department because it a benchmark in terms of safety and technology in its now highly competitive market segment.

Fiat says it represents a company blueprint for a future which embraces a modern approach, new brand strategies, radical innovations in customer relations and a lasting process of expansion.

An ambitious statement but the 500 certainly proves that Fiat means business. Its products have suddenly become much better built in addition to being far more attractive.

While some investment analysts think Chrysler is unsalvageable, and therefore of no use to Fiat, others are now taking the view that Chrysler is a turnaround story in the making, one that could lift the Italian auto makers' fortunes.

In a Nov. 20 note, UBS said Fiat's partnership with Chrysler in the near term is worth €1 ($1.49 U.S.) a share to Fiat, equivalent to 10 per cent of the Italian auto maker's latest share price.

"We continue to see value in Fiat as an agent of transformational change and not owning Fiat is akin to a risky bet against structural change in European autos," UBS analyst Philippe Houchois and his colleagues wrote.

The most bullish endorser of the Fiat-Chrysler partnership is Adam Jonas, Morgan Stanley's European auto analyst. In a report published last month, he rated the shares a "buy" because the "current share price massively under-appreciates the substantial call-optionality that Fiat shareholders have with the tie-up with Chrysler."

Fiat, led by Italian-Canadian CEO Sergio Marchionne, owns 20 per cent of Chrysler, for which it paid nothing, and can boost it to 35 per cent under certain conditions, such as producing a car in the United States that achieves 40 miles a gallon. Mr. Marchionne and his team took management control of Chrysler in the summer.

Fiat shares, listed in Milan, have been among the industry's best performers, with one-year return of almost 108 per cent and a 6-month return of 28 per cent. The equivalent figures for France's PSA Peugeot Citroen are 94 per cent and 23 per cent. UBS downgraded Fiat to "neutral" from "buy" on Friday, not long after Fiat shares topped €11, more than three times their 52-week low. They closed the week at €10.

Mr. Marchionne's turnaround plan for Chrysler assumes the U.S. auto market will rebound to 14.5 million sales in 2014 - a figure analysts consider credible - from 10.5 million this year and that Chrysler's market share will rise to about 14 per cent from less than 10 per cent this year. Chrysler will rely on Fiat's small-car platforms to overhaul Chrysler's clapped-out fleet of passenger cars and small SUVs. The first Fiat-inspired cars are to reach Chrysler showrooms in 2011.

Mr. Jonas, of Morgan Stanley, thinks the synergies of combining the Fiat and Chrysler platforms and other business operations, such as purchasing, could average €1.7-billion a year starting in 2011.

In October, he valued Fiat's stake in Chrysler, plus the synergies, at €8.5 a Fiat share, raising his target price for all of Fiat to €16.80 a share.

Chrysler Group LLC, in a step that will help Fiat SpA increase its controlling stake, plans to invest $179 million in the next five years at a Michigan factory to build the Italian company’s 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter engines.

The production of as many as 250,000 engines annually will add 155 employees, according to documents Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler filed with the state for job-creation tax credits.

The fuel-efficient engine would be used in the Fiat 500 subcompact next year and satisfy a requirement for the Turin, Italy-based automaker to expand its 20 percent stake in Chrysler. The confirmation is the first of Fiat technology being added to a Chrysler facility.

“That’s good news,” said Serge Escude, an analyst with Cassa Lombarda in Milan who has a “hold” rating on Fiat shares. “It’s rather quick.”

Fiat can acquire an additional 5 percent stake each time it reaches one of three targets, including building a fuel- efficient engine in the U.S. Fiat may get as much as 30 percent ownership by the end of March 2011 and the remaining portion at the end of 2011, said Adam Jonas, a Morgan Stanley analyst based in London.

Chrysler is under Fiat control after emerging from a U.S.- backed bankruptcy this year following a government bailout. The U.S. Treasury owns 9.85 percent of Chrysler, Canada has 2.46 percent and 67.69 percent belongs to the United Auto Workers union retiree medical fund, according to bankruptcy documents.

Expansion Targets

The other goals the U.S. government set for allowing Fiat to increase ownership are producing a car in the U.S. that gets at least 40 miles per gallon and reaching sales targets for Chrysler vehicles outside North America.

The plant, in Dundee, Michigan, builds 4-cylinder engines ranging from 1.8 to 2.4 liters. In August, Chrysler bought the stakes in the engine-plant business that it had shared with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. The operation is called the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance.

The new Bravo is an important model in Fiat’s revamped lineup and is key to the Italian carmaker expanding into more diverse markets. The one model will not only be spawning wagon and crossover variants, but possibly a new cabrio and MPV as well. This latest rendering reveals what the crossover version will likely be styled like when it finally hits the roads in late 2009.
The crossover is being co-developed with sister brand Alfa Romeo, which is developing its own premium version to tackle the upcoming Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q5. Unlike its rivals, the Bravo crossover is expected to be available in both FWD and AWD configurations and could even be big enough to seat seven.
Key features of the crossover will be its raised ride height, protective underbody panels and plastic side cladding and a new front bumper with integrated fog lights. Basic styling will be very similar to the Bravo hatch on which it’s based, but a longer wheelbase and wider track will undoubtedly give it more presence.
Production of the new model will be handled by Fiat’s Miafiori plant, which is currently under utilized producing the Multipla MPV. Even with the Bravo crossover, there will be still room for further models at Miafiori, so expect to see the aforementioned convertible and MPV versions of the Bravo be given the green light.

A new variant of the Fiat Punto is launched in Brazil, in fact two new variants — the Punto Creative I and the Punto Creative II.

According to the Brazilian blogger, a new Punto with 1.6 ltr 16 valve flex engine is being tested in Brazil but the Creative I and II are the variants of the existing 1.4 ltr SAFIRE version.

MP3 CD radio, electric rear panel, knife type key, alloy wheels, rear spoiler and creative stickers are the goodies added to the Creative I.

Fiat Should Add Italian-Made Electric Cars to Plan, Union Says

Italy’s biggest carmaker, should add electric models and hybrids in exchange for continued government incentives, the company’s largest trade union said.

While Fiat is already introducing Multi Air gasoline engines that cut consumption and emissions by at least 10 percent, it could go further, Giorgio Airaudo, a leader of the Fiom CGIL metalworkers’ union, said yesterday in an interview.

“It makes no sense for us to confirm production of old products,” Airaudo said by phone from Turin, where Fiat is based. “The government needs to link incentives to innovation.”

Unions are concerned Fiat may shift production of new models to North America following its alliance with Chrysler Group LLC. Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne has urged Italy to retain payments for scrapping older cars and buying more efficient ones to buoy sales amid the economic slump.

Airaudo, whose union is the country’s biggest, with 370,000 members, said that while Industry Minister Claudio Scajola is right to say Fiat’s plant in Termini Imerese, Sicily, should stay open, the site could be put to better use.

The carmaker said in June it plans to continue production of the Lancia Ypsilon at the factory through 2011 and then use it for “other, non-automotive, production.” The plant is Fiat’s smallest in Italy and employs 1,400 people.

“Over time a lot of investment has been made in that factory and I’m told the quality of production is good,” Scajola said yesterday in Dubai.

Workers from Termini Imerese occupied the town’s city hall on Nov. 18. Scajola visted them the next day and said he’ll take up their concerns when he meets with Marchionne on Dec. 1. to review Fiat’s production plan.

Five Plants

Fiat, Italy’s largest manufacturer and biggest private employer, runs five auto plants in the country, with the workforce totaling 31,000. Marchionne plans to cut production in line with shrinking demand. Fiat says it loses 1,000 euros ($1,493) on every vehicle produced at Termini Imerese.

The company should bring electric-car technology to Italy through its link with Chrysler, Airaudo said.

“There’s no reason to limit the development of electric cars to the U.S.,” he said. “We should be developing new technology that we can sell in Europe.

Fiat already uses electric technology for its delivery vans, a segment where it sees the most demand. Lou Rhodes, who heads Chrysler’s electric vehicle development, has been charged with overseeing the same segment at Fiat, a Fiat spokesman said.

The Fiat 500 should be highly successful car when it launches in the USA. Sales numbers in the UK for the car have been quite favorable as the car was a top ten selling car in the month of October.

This was in accordance with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders who reported that the Fiat 500 sold 2,989 units last month. This was an improvement of 993 in sales for the Fiat 500 compared to last year.

In relation to the USA, Chrysler plans to introduce the 500 as their first car amongst many others which will grace US roads. Chrysler made this announcement recently and the car should hit sometime late 2010.

The Fiat 500 will be a great competitor to the MINI Cooper and some could argue that it is more stylish than the BMW made MINI.

Fiat cars amongst the greenest in Australia

Italian motoring giants Fiat has become the first car maker to have its entire range represented in the top five greenest cars available in Australia.

The popular Fiat 500 offers Australia's best fuel economy in one version and the second highest green rating in another version, followed by the Fiat Punto in third spot and the Fiat Ritmo rounding out the top five 'Top Performers' in the Australian Government's Green Vehicle Guide with its newly launched Fiat Ritmo Dynamic 1.4.

Fiat's performance in the Australian Green Vehicle Guide mirrors the marque's performance in Europe - it has been the number one performer in having the lowest range average for carbon dioxide emissions across its range based on total sales for the second year running.

Following the huge success of Abarth’s re-launch last year, the Fiat Group’s performance division has now created the ultimate sporting expression of the 500. As befits a car with its roots firmly ensconced in motorsport, all versions of the new small Abarth feature a zesty 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, which has been designed to be responsive throughout its entire rev range as well as being economical and gentle on the environment.

The heart of the Abarth 500 is its 1.4-litre 16-valve turbo engine. This engine develops a peppy 135bhp at 5500rpm, with peak torque of 206Nm (152lb ft) in Sport mode at 3000rpm. The big difference is what Fiat calls, "a fully fledged window to the sky."

The 500C follows in the tradition of the original Fiat 500 and uses a rolling roof design that allows the car to retain the shape of the coupe. The soft top will be available in three colors (ivory, red and black) and sales should begin in Europe in the spring.

Fiat (FIA.MI) CEO Sergio Marchionne said on Wednesday that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's apparent readiness to extend state incentives to the auto industry beyond the end of this year was "encouraging".

Marchionne said on the sidelines of an industry seminar he was "ready to work with the system to find a solution for incentives in 2010 and 2011". The Fiat boss has previously said that he favours phasing out incentives over two years.

As we near the anticipated early November announcement about the future of Chrysler, news agencies are already speculating about its plans. Today, Reuters reported that Fiat will spin off Ram into its own brand and new, jointly designed Chrysler models won’t arrive until late 2011.

Publications such as Car & Driver magazine have suggested the new models will include a midsize sedan based on a Fiat and branded as the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200, which was shown as a concept car at last year’s Detroit auto show.

The redesigned Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee have already been announced and will go on sale at some point in 2010, as will the Fiat 500.

As to the Ram brand rumor, Reuters says its to serve as an umbrella for all of the Dodge trucks. However, with weakening demand for small trucks like the Dakota and sales of the Ram falling behind its Detroit rivals, we’re not sure there is any reason to change the way Dodge sells trucks.

Fiat CEO: Plan to shut Sterling Heights plant unchanged

Fiat SpA CEO Sergio Marchionne said Thursday he "has no plans on my desk" to reverse a decision to close the company's Sterling Heights assembly plant by the end of 2010, putting about 1,300 employees out of work.

Hundreds of those workers and their families rallied last Friday in front of the plant, urging Marchionne to reconsider their future. Chrysler cut about 35,000 jobs in the two years leading to its April 30 filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Marchionne said he dropped the idea two weeks ago of freshening the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger, the two weak-selling midsize sedans Sterling Heights workers make. Marchionne took control of Chrysler June 10 when a taxpayer-funded sale of Chrysler's most competitive assets closed.

He met Thursday in Auburn Hills with Claudio Scajola, Italy's Economy and Development Minister, and journalists.

U.S. sales of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles fell 42% in September from a year earlier. Through the first 9 months of this year, sales of the Sebring and Avenger are down 72% and 49%, respectively, from the year-ago period.

Earlier this week, Marchionne said Fiat, which gained a 20% stake of Chrysler without paying cash, will invest $215 million in an Italian factory it bought at auction from bankrupt coach builder Bertone.

Next year, Chrysler's agreement with Magna Steyr, for production of Chrysler 300C sedans and Jeep Grand Cherokees in Graz, Austria, expires. Fiat will transfer that production to the former Bertone factory in Italy. Those vehicles are sold in Europe.

Despite Chrysler's anemic sales, Marchionne said the company is "not bleeding like people think we are."

Fiat will report its results for the third quarter on Oct. 21.

Marchionne called the cash-for-clunkers incentive, which drove purchases in August, a disturbance.

Respect for the environment

The new MultiAir engines prove the point. Compared to a conventional petrol engine of the same size, a MultiAir engine develops more power (up to 10%) and torque (up to 15%), while consuming significantly less (up to 10%) and emitting less CO2 (up to 10%), less particulates (up to 40%) and less NOx (up to 60%).

In the same way the second generation of Multijet diesel engines also offers more accurate combustion, with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and drivability. The methane-fuelled engine is not only the most ecological dual fuel engine in segment B, producing only 115 g/km of CO2, but is also the most economical thanks to record running costs of under 4 Euros per 100 km. Among other advantages, methane-fuelled engines benefit from the highest government incentives in Italy: 5,000 Euros if combined with a contribution for scrapping your old car.

Alfa Romeo, the sporty saloon car maker owned by Fiat (FIA.MI), expects to sell up to 120,000 cars this year, up 11 percent from 2008, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

"In 2008 we sold 108,000 vehicles, this year we should be at the level of 115,000-120,000," Sergio Cravero said at a presentation of the MiTo Multiair model.

"The 300,000 level remains our target for the future, but that can't be reached in 2010," he said.

Fiat India Automobiles Limited (FIAL) said it intended to increase its focus on exports under which it had already exported the recently launched Fiat Linea to South Africa. As part of this strategy, Fiat has begun testing new growth opportunities overseas with sharp focus on SAARC countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka as well as other right-hand drive countries. FIAL targets to export 7,000 units of Fiat’s India manufactured cars this year. As a first step, it exported a batch of Fiat Linea to South Africa, a batch similar to the one driven on Indian roads. Fiat’s products have been well received in South Africa in the past with supplies coming from Fiat’s Brazil and European plants. Fiat India expects to receive a good response to the Linea 1.4 emotion pack in this market. In the last 12 months, FIAL has exported Palio to South Africa. FIAL is a 50:50 industrial joint venture between Fiat Group Automobiles SpA and Tata Motors. The company has about 2,200 employees and the unit is located at Ranjangaon in Pune. The board of directors of FIAL comprises five nominees each from Fiat and Tata.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 Adventure, a brand new special series that brings new meaning to the famous slogan “The car that does what you think”, has today been launched in Italy and will subsequently arrive in the rest of Europe. The original version is for those at one with nature, with a love of outdoor activities, but also for professionals in the agricultural and forestry sectors.

Robust and with plenty of storage, the new version has echos of the Panda 4X4 Sisley, the famous compact off-roader that became synonymous with practicality and durability during the 1990s. With four-wheel drive and a choice of 1.2 60 HP and 1.3 Multijet16V 70 HP engines, the Fiat Panda 4×4 Adventure is available in Italy for € 14,100 and € 16,000 respectively (on the road).

From the outside, the adventurous spirit of the new Panda 4×4 is apparent from its original green bodywork, which emphasises the car’s bond with nature and Fiat’s eternal special attention to the environment and sustainable transport. The same colour is used for the front and rear bumpers, enhanced by the grey of the central badges, while the lights are bronzed and the windows are tinted.

In the spirit of off-roaders, a matt black was chosen for the pillars, the roof bars, the side bars and the mudguard arches. The 14″ wheels (painted in dark grey) with 165/70 M+S tyres and the black framing of the rear lights complete the off-road look of this new version. The inside of the car gives the same impression of robustness and practicality with its black, washable, anti-tear technical fabric and the scratch-resistant washable floor mats. Last week, Fiat displayed the Fiat Palio Weekend Eletrico at Hall San Pablo 2008. Its development was created in conjunction with the hydro Itaipu and the Swiss company KWO. This car is predominantly developed for the Brazilian and European markets, but will soon spread to other markets.

The Fiat Palio Weekend Eletrico is run by a 20 HP Electric motor which is powered with a Nickel-Cd battery located in the lower part of the trunk, (Lithium-Ion can be used, but is very expensive). The expected range is 120 km. It has a gear lever with 3 operations : Drive, Neutral and Reverse. This car is not a hybrid, it’s a fully electric short distance city car.

As for the body shape, there has been a minor face-lift, it comes only in one color – green, and has small blue graphics on the doors. No news has been revealed so far about production and prices, but, we are quite sure that it will be launched in European region first, like Norway – where there is suitable infrastructure to support electric cars.

IAB Comment: The Fiat Palio Weekend Eletrico, we guess, is the world’s first electric station-wagon. It somehow looks heavy, and we are not sure if a 20HP motor can do the job effectively. Apart from performance issues, we also reckon that this car will have a range lot lower than the quoted 120km. If it all works well, it will be a huge leap for Fiat and perhaps the entire Electric car industry. Also read our earlier post on Electric Tata Indica.

I just came across these Spy hots of new Fiat Grande fresh 2010 Fiat Grande Punto without any camouflage whatsoever have slipped into the internet.

The facelifted Grande Punto sports a revised front end with reworked headlamps and a new front bumper that now incorporates three grilles and a dark grey center section while the photos also reveal that Fiat’s designers restyled the tail lights.

Inside, the 2010MY Grande Punto boast a new dashboard design that is heavily inspired from the C-Segment Bravo. Highlights include the deep-set gauges on the instrument panel, the new audio and climate systems as well as the circular side vents.

Here’s a question to ponder as Fiat takes control of Chrysler. Will Americans buy cars engineered by Italians for Europeans? History says no. For years, General Motors brought over the occasional Opel and tried to sell it as a Saturn or a Cadillac or whatever. The Saturn L-series was an Opel Vectra. The Cadillac Catera, or Caterrible, was an Opel Omega. Both failed.

In each case they encountered the same problem. Thanks to higher fuel prices, Europeans pay more for passenger cars. So when U.S. carmakers brought their Eurocars here, they often stripped them down to reduce costs and still make a profit at the lower prices Americans would pay. GM’s imported Opels often got weaker suspensions or the interior appointments weren’t as nice. The cars were watered down. Ford had a similar problem with the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, nicknamed the mistake. Ford kept the nice features and gave the cars the same nimble handling as the European Mondeo. But Americans didn’t want to pay up for a car smaller than a Taurus. It flopped.

Even Volkswagen—with its pricey family sedans and compacts—has never gotten big sales numbers in the U.S. The cars are too expensive to penetrate the mainstream, quality lags the Japanese and American models and the euro-to-dollar exchange rate has been killing them. Then you have failure in the U.S. by Fiat and Renault. In other words, Europeans have not been able to break the interloper’s curse when it comes to mainstream cars. In luxury, it must be said, BMW and Mercedes are kingpins.

In fairness to Fiat, a lot of the examples mentioned here were simply bad automobiles or wretched management decisions. Fiat plans to build cars here in Chrysler plants, which means competitive labor costs, lower shipping rates and no currency exchange risk. The business case looks much better. Also, the Italians know styling. The Fiat 500, pictured above, and the Alfa Romeo cars are quite catchy.

But to succeed, Fiat will have to adjust those cars to meet American tastes. European passenger cars tend to be engineered smaller to fit in tight European parking spaces and city streets. Americans like roomy rides. Fiat’s quality is barely average in Europe. They will have to step that up to compete with the likes of Toyota, Honda, Ford and, yes, GM. And when they come here in about two years, there may be even more competition from India, China, another European player or whoever Roger Penske can contract to make new Saturn cars. Fiat also has to improve Chrysler’s home-grown models, none of which get a friendly nod from Consumer Reports despite the supposed overhaul that outgoing CEO Robert Nardelli gave them. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is a fix-it man. But he has a lot of fixing to do. His Chrysler play has hope, but it’s far from over, folks.

The Fiat Panda Aria concept car marks the return of the twin-cylinder engine to cars, something which Fiat thinks is the next step to reducing fuel consumption and improving emissions. For the longest time, the smallest of cars like the K-cars of Japan have been using 3-cylinder inline engines. Fiat’s new SGE 900cc Turbo twin-cylinder engine knocks one off the cylinder count.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies decided to downsize from a conventional 4-cylinder engine to a 2-cylinder turbocharged engine. The engine incorporates Fiat’s Multiair electronic inlet valve control system (fancy word for throttle-less intake), turbocharging, and a Stop and Start device to reduce fuel consumption during heavy traffic. Two versions of the engine are available, with a third one under development.

The first variant is a 80 horsepower version that uses a petrol-methane fuel supply system. It runs on a mixture of 70% methane and 30% hydrogen. Then you have the Mono Fuel petrol-only version which puts out 105 horsepower. The third one currently being developed is a normally aspirated version making 65 horsepower.

The engine is 20% lighter and takes up 25% less space than a 4-cylinder engine that makes a similiar power output.

Other than the engine, the Fiat Panda Aria has a few other interesting features. The interior is upholstered with natural fibres, woven coconut fibre and biodegradable elements, while the exterior panelling is made of semi-transparent eco-resin and the structure is treated with opaque ‘totouch’ paint. Even the tyres are Pirelli’s experimental ultra-green tyres which use new compounds and new aromatic oil-free textile weaves.

Fiat officially announced the sticker price of the convertible release of the Fiat 500C. The city car will be tagged starting at £11300 when it hits dealership this coming summer in the United Kingdom.

The Fiat 500 C aims to please the sector which loves value rides and appreciative of soft-top vehicles.

One of the most famous of all Italian carmakers is Fiat. Those of you who love cars must have heard about the new Fiat Bravo. Though this car from the stables of Fiat has been re-launched recently, it is not entirely a new car and has been around since 1995. In fact the Fiat Bravo had been doing the rounds from 1995 to 2001. Recently in 2007, this name was revived again as the replacement for the Stilo. New Fiat Grande Punto pictures

Fiat's Grande Punto facelift has leaked onto the internet.

The pictures show parts of an undisguised Fiat Grande Punto, which is due to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The Punto has a revised front end, inlcuding restyled headlamps and a new front bumper with three grilles and a grey centre section. The photos also show that the rear lights have been restyled.

The pictures also show a new dashboard that takes clear styling cues from the Bravo and features a revised gauge design and circular air vents.

The revised Fiat Grande Punto is also expected to benefit from the introduction of cleaner engines.

It goes on sale in early 2010.

You might be wondering why KickingTires, the blog for car buyers, is posting about the subcompact Fiat 500, a car that's not available in the U.S. Well, it will be sold here next year, according to a Bloomberg report, and I had a chance to drive one on a recent trip to the United Kingdom. My early take on it is that it's a fun-to-drive little car in the vein of the Mini Cooper, but perhaps not the model the new Chrysler-Fiat alliance needs first in the U.S.

One characteristic of the 500 that's very similar to the Cooper is its suspension, which manages to offer decent comfort on bumpy pavement while still delivering a sporting experience when cornering. The 500's steering, though not quite as weighty and engaging as the Cooper's, is quick and in keeping with the car's lively personality.

My 500 was powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder gas engine producing 69 hp. It's one of a handful of engines offered in the car overseas, but my guess is that it won't be offered in the States out of concern that customers might deem its relatively low output undesirable. A more likely base engine for U.S.-bound cars is the 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine that's rated at 100 hp, a little less than a Hyundai Accent.

I drove the 500 on everything from narrow city streets to the Motorway — the U.K.'s version of Interstates — and the 1.2-liter engine offered sprightly acceleration in the city and more modest performance at highway speeds. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission, and the stick's light, precise movement through the gears made for easy shifting. I did have to be diligent about making sure the transmission was in the correct gear in order to keep engine power available.

Interior materials quality and construction is pretty good for a small car. It might be a little behind what Volkswagen is doing in terms of the richness of its materials, but the trim is as nice as what you'd see in small cars from Honda and Nissan. More importantly, the interior is much nicer than what Chrysler has been able to muster in its Dodge Caliber hatchback, the smallest car it currently offers.

I wasn't a big fan of the 500's seats, though. The Lounge trim level I tested had attractive black-and-white checked seat fabric, and the driver's seat was height-adjustable, but the flat backrest wasn't the most comfortable when I drove longer than an hour or so. I could have also used a telescoping steering column; I was sitting fairly far away from the steering wheel with my arms stretched forward once I had positioned myself a comfortable distance from the pedals. Meanwhile, the two-person backseat — while somewhat short on headroom — can handle adult passengers if the front ones are willing to slide their seats forward to offer some extra legroom.

There's no question the 500 will improve Chrysler's small-car offerings in the U.S. It could also make a sales splash among car buyers who want the next new thing. That said, I think its small size will restrict it to niche status, and a niche model isn't what Chrysler needs right now.

What it does need is a small car that can take on the Honda Civic and Mazda3 and sell in high volume. The 500 isn't that car, but there are other, larger Fiat cars, like the Grande Punto and Bravo, that have potential. There's a good chance we'll see them in some form ... eventually.

Fiat Revs Up Junk Market

Italian auto maker Fiat SpA is tapping the new-issuance market for a €1.25 billion ($1.78 billion) bond, due to mature 2012, in another sign of Europe's reviving market for high-yield corporate debt.

Despite being rated as high-yield, or "junk," status, the new four-year issue Thursday drew heavy demand in the book-building process, with subscriptions of about €8 billion despite some concerns over its liquidity levels and its stake in ailing U.S. auto maker Chrysler Group LLC.

Fiat's bond will yield 9.25%, compared with a yield of 6.255% that was offered by investment-grade German car manufacturer BMW AG in February. The gap reflects the premium that Fiat must pay for funding.

In late May, the European junk-bond market began to revive following a yearlong hibernation imposed by investors' wariness of poor credit ratings.

Since then, there has been a steady stream of companies, including Italian telecommunications company Wind SpA and French spirits company Pernod-Ricard SA, launching high-yield bonds.

Fiat became a so-called fallen angel earlier this year when its credit ratings were downgraded to junk status from investment grade, adding to the company's liquidity problems.

That kind of a downgrade increases funding costs and eliminates investment-grade funds from its list of possible investors.

Jonathan Moore, a high-yield research analyst at Evolution Securities, said the bond market was familiar with the company and the deal would be completed with ease.

"It will not be a big test for the market, it is something it will be able to handle easily," Mr. Moore said. "It's a tough market for autos, but Fiat has done a reasonably good job and they are one of the auto companies that has done OK."

Analysts at research firm CreditSights said the proceeds of the bond would provide a useful boost to Fiat's liquidity, which currently stands at €6.5 billion.

The company, which has total net debt of €17.8 billion, has €7.4 billion maturing in the next 18 months, according to analysts at Standard & Poor's Corp.

"We understand that these maturities are currently covered, but there is still no headroom under the group's available committed bank line," S&P analyst Barbara Castellano said.

But analysts at CreditSights said that taking advantage of the receptiveness of the bond market and bolstering the company's liquidity cushion were positive moves for Fiat and would improve its credit-risk profile.

A Fiat spokesman declined to comment on the subject.

High-yield bonds are rated below Baa3 by ratings firm Moody's Investors Service and BBB- by S&P and Fitch Ratings.

S&P on Thursday said it was holding Fiat's rating at BB+ on a negative credit watch, suggesting that a possible downgrade could be pending.

Fiat also has a Ba1 rating from Moody's and a BB+ rating from Fitch.
